Welcome to our school

Welcome to Poroutawhao School. We are a small country school (Years 1-8) with a lot of heart, strong community support, and a focus on modern learning.

When you arrive here at Poroutawhao, you will see a wide-open and green space for the children to play and learn set amongst the backdrop of the Tararua Mountains. We are committed to giving all students the best education possible. More about our approach to learning here.

Poroutawhao School is a proud rural school, 10 minutes North of Levin on State Highway One. Our school was first named for its location - at the edge of the bush - and has remained in place for 100 years, serving the families and communities of our land: Ngati Huia ki Poroutawhao, landowners, farmers, growers, and the peoples of Waitarere/Okatia Beach. In 2024 our school will celebrate 100 years of service to our communities. We will celebrate our centenary over the long weekend Kings Birthday 31st May-2nd June. We look forward to welcoming you back to Poroutawhao. To learn more go to our Centennial Page.

We offer a safe, stress-free environment featuring effective school-wide pastoral care. Our range of outside the classroom activities includes day trips and school camps. Our school sports teams participate in local school sports competitions. We also provide safe and reliable school transport services from Waitārere, Moutua and Levin.
